The mindset-first way to quit

7 Psychological Hacks to Make Quitting V*ping Feel Easy

Most people think quitting has to be miserable. It doesn't. Here are 7 mental hacks that makes quitting feel easy and actually stick for life.

By Max F., Co-founder of Breev.

If you've tried before and found it awful, you're not weak. You were probably fighting it: white-knuckling every craving, counting the days, feeling like you'd lost something. These seven shifts change how quitting feels. Some will sound too simple. Stick with them.

Realise it's not giving you anything

That nice feeling when you take a hit isn't pleasure. It's the uncomfortable itch from your last hit going away for a few minutes. Then it comes back, and you top up again. People who don't v*pe don't feel that itch at all. So when you quit, you're not losing a treat. You're getting rid of the thing that's been making you feel uneasy all along.

Stop believing it helps

It calms you down. It helps you focus. It makes a night out better. It gets you through boredom. Every one of those is the same trick: the v*pe relieves the restlessness it caused. Before you started, you handled stress, boredom and nights out just fine. You still can, and probably better.

Throw away the willpower

Willpower turns quitting into a fight: you against the craving, every hour, for weeks. No wonder it's exhausting. But you only need willpower when you think you're giving something up. Once you see there's nothing to give up, there's nothing to fight. You're not resisting it. You just don't want it.

It's never as bad as you think

Most people dread the physical withdrawal. In reality it's mild, a slightly empty, restless feeling, a bit like being peckish. The loud part is the voice in your head saying "I want one." When it shows up, don't panic or grit your teeth. See it for what it is: the addiction running out of fuel. Every time it fades, it comes back weaker.

Don't wait for the "right time"

There's always a reason to wait: a stressful week at work, a wedding, even a night out. The perfect moment never comes, because the v*pe makes every moment feel like a bad one to quit. Pick a day, soon, and go into it excited, not nervous. You're not losing anything. You're getting out.

Don't hide from your life

Lots of people quit by avoiding everything: no pub, no mates, no coffee breaks. That only makes you feel like you're missing out. Do the opposite. Go out. Have the pint. Enjoy the morning coffee. Every time you do something you "always v*ped" during and realise you're fine, it loses another bit of its grip.

Never have "just one"

Weeks in, there'll be a moment when one puff seems harmless: a drink, a bad day, a mate offering. I failed 3 times by telling myself "I'm not addicted anymore, one night won't hurt". That isn't a treat. It's the whole cycle starting again. There's no such thing as just one. And if you do slip, it's not a verdict on you. Don't buy the story that you need it, and carry on.

Our story

Why we built Breev

I'm Max. When my mum was diagnosed with cancer caused by a lifetime of sm*king, I was v*ping like a chimney. That day, my whole family decided we were done.

We tried patches and gum, but they just kept us hooked on nicotine. And all of us missed the same thing: the ritual. The quick break at work. The puff after dinner. Our hands kept reaching for something that wasn't there.

So my best friend James and I spent a full year building something to replace it. It's a natural, nicotine-free inhaler you pull on just like before, with real flavour and none of the bad stuff. There's no nicotine, no vapour and nothing to charge.

My family were the guinea pigs. We're now all over three years nicotine-free, and my mum beat her cancer. Since then, more than 30,000 people have used Breev to quit.

That's what Breev is for. Your head does the quitting. Breev gives your hands something to do while it catches up.
